Top 5 Things To Inspect On Your Roof Before Spring Weather Hits

As winter comes to an end, it’s important to make sure your home is ready for the incoming spring weather. When you are ready to dive into spring cleaning, make sure to not leave out an often overlooked part of your house: the roof! Harsh winter weather may have caused some damage to your roof’s exterior and interior, so it’s important to inspect your roof before the spring season. Read on to find out what five things you should inspect on your roof now.

#1 Shingles

The first and most obvious thing you want to search for is any missing, damaged, or worn shingles. It’s common for shingles to incur tears or cracks during the winter months due to cold weather, ice, and snow. To get a proper look, you may need to use a ladder and get on your roof for a close inspection. A trusted professional, like the ones here at Allphase Construction, will be able to do this for you while following proper safety precautions.

#2 Gutters

Next, you will want to make sure your gutters are clean of any debris they may have collected. You can clear this material by hand yourself or hire a professional to do so. After everything is clean, run some water through your gutter using a hose and check for any clogs or leakage in the downspouts. Afterward, look over your gutters and check to see if they are still connected to your home’s exterior.

#3 Flashing

Homeowners often overlook flashing, yet it’s still an important part of your roofing system. It is the thin material installed around critical areas of your roof that directs water away and prevents leaks and water damage. If your gutters incurred some sort of buildup or damage over the winter, restricted water flow could have caused damage to your flashing as well. So make sure to check the flashing for any visible holes, cracks, or missing pieces.

#4 Chimney

Be on the lookout for white stains building up on your roof’s chimney. These stains mean your chimney is absorbing water and can lead to leakage. Also, make sure there are no damages to your chimney’s exteriors and seals.

#5 Attic

After you’ve finished checking everything on your roof’s exterior, you’ll want to head inside and see if your roof’s interior has any damage. With a flashlight peak around inside your attic. You’ll want to look for any cracks, leaks, sagging, or ventilation issues. Any of these are sure-fire signs you will need roof repairs fast.
