5 Roof Types You Can Install On Your Home

Getting a new roof installed is a great way to increase the property value and curb appeal of your home. And while variety is usually a good thing, the sheer amount of options when it comes to roofing materials may become daunting for a homeowner. To help you on your journey to a new roof, we’ve compiled a list of the 5 most common types of roofs, their characteristics, and their benefits.

Type 1 – Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roofing material and for good reason. They’re not only affordable but also very versatile. Asphalt shingles are durable and can withstand multiple environmental conditions. Not to mention they come in a variety of colors and textures, so you are sure to find something that fits your style. It is also fairly easy to install and maintain asphalt shingles. Because of this, numerous qualified professionals install them. It’s also important to note that asphalt shingles have a lifespan of about 20 years before they’ll need to be replaced.

Type 2 – Metal

Metal roofs are low maintenance and easy to install—not to mention they can be installed over a pre-existing roof. They’re great at protecting your home from rain and snow so they’re ideal for those who live in an area with frequent inclement weather. While metal roofs are more pricey compared to asphalt shingles, metal roofs have a life expectancy of around 50-60 years. Steel, zinc, and aluminum are just a few types of metal. Metal roofs are installed as slats, roof panels or to mimic the shape of traditional shingles.

Type 3 – Slate

Slate roofs, while one of the more expensive roofing options are durable and fire-resistant. They are also mold-resistant and waterproof, making them perfect for more humid climates. Slate roofing also has incredible longevity—it can last up to 100 years! However, slate roofs are also fragile and can be easily broken when stepped on.

Type 4 – Wood

A wood roof can be installed using wood shakes or wood shingles. Wood shakes are split by hand making them have a thicker rougher texture whereas wood shingles are machine-cut, thin, and smooth. These roofs are best suited for areas with dry climates and shouldn’t be exposed to a lot of moisture or fire. Wood roofs are one of the most expensive kinds of roofs, but they have a lifespan of up to 30 years.

Type 5 – Tile

While tile roofs are on the expensive side of roof types, they come in various cuts and styles and can be made from a variety of materials. The most common types of tile are concrete and clay. While low maintenance after installation, tile roofs are difficult and pricey to install. Tile roofs are also very durable with a lifespan of up to 100 years. They are fireproof and impervious to rot or insect damage, making them great for hotter climates.
